Series and Parallel Capacitor Calculator

Enter your capacitor values, pick the unit and connection, and get the total capacitance.

How to use this calculator

  1. Type the capacitor values, separated by commas, spaces or new lines.
  2. Choose the unit (pF/nF/µF/F) and series or parallel.
  3. Click Calculate for the total capacitance.

Capacitor formulas (the opposite of resistors)

Capacitors in parallel add up:

Ctotal = C₁ + C₂ + C₃ + …

Capacitors in series combine as reciprocals:

1 / Ctotal = 1/C₁ + 1/C₂ + 1/C₃ + …

So the series total is smaller than the smallest capacitor, while the parallel total is the simple sum — exactly the reverse of resistors.

Frequently asked questions

How do capacitors combine in parallel?
They add up: Ctotal = C₁ + C₂ + … — the opposite of resistors.
What is the total of two 10 µF capacitors in series?
5 µF — in series the total is less than the smallest capacitor.
Why are capacitors the opposite of resistors?
Capacitance adds in parallel and combines as reciprocals in series, the reverse of how resistance behaves.
