Resistor Color Code Calculator

Pick the number of bands and select each color to read off the resistance, tolerance and (for 6-band) temperature coefficient.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose the number of bands (4, 5 or 6).
  2. Select the colour of each band from left to right.
  3. Read the resistance, tolerance and (for 6 bands) temperature coefficient instantly.

How resistor color codes work

Resistors use colored bands to mark their value. Reading from the end with the bands grouped closest together:

  • 4-band: digit, digit, multiplier, tolerance.
  • 5-band: digit, digit, digit, multiplier, tolerance.
  • 6-band: as 5-band plus a temperature-coefficient (ppm/°C) band.

Frequently asked questions

How do I read resistor colour bands?
Read from the end where the bands are grouped: the first bands are digits, the next is the multiplier, and the last is the tolerance.
Which way round do I read a resistor?
Put the tolerance band (often gold or silver, and slightly spaced apart) on the right, then read the digit bands from the left.
What does a gold band mean?
As a tolerance band, gold means ±5%. As a multiplier band it means ×0.1.
